FROM OUR CLUB PRESIDENT:

  Jay Pienta 309-786-1364

The year is starting off  in high speed. Our first big project will be the finishing of the clubs floors. The club house will be closed the first two weeks of March. Beginning on  Monday March 1, we will be moving everything out of the bar and kitchen area. Floor tile will be pulled up, and the bathrooms will be updated. Starting  March 8, the floors will be refinished to match the main banquet room. Floors should be done by Monday  March 15 and we will be completing the bathroom updates. Everything should be ready for our March meeting on the 16th. As part of our project, we will also be resurfacing the banquet room so all the floors will match and look brand new. We also will need to replace the existing AC units in the banquet room with more efficient ones. Also on our list will be a new PA system. So things are moving along.

Spring Party and Egg Hunt is Coming up.  Click for details

The club would like to invite our members to an “IDEAS” meeting. This meeting would consist of gathering ideas from its members on ways of improving our club. Some ideas already on this list would be: updating of our website and Facebook? To mention a few. I would like to schedule this meeting for March 18th. 6:00p.m. Please bring your ideas. Ideas must have been thought out carefully, placed on paper, and detailed on how this idea could be completed. Ideas are open to all areas of the club and we just ask that you carefully think out your ideas and present it to the group. We may have the bar open that night along with some snacks. This way the meeting will be low keyed and give us a chance to throw out some good ideas.

Remember that this will be the last newsletter you will receive IF you have not already renewed your 2010 membership. Starting with the March issue, only 2010 members will be receiving the newsletter. Please sign up soon. Memberships are going fast this year. Don’t miss out.

Don’t forget to volunteer at one of the QCCA shows.

Don’t forget our euchre nights this month AND the possibility of PINOCHLE nights (page 2 this issue).

MEMBERSHIP REMINDER

REMEMBER that this issue of the newsletter will be your last if you have not renewed your 2010 club membership. Starting with the March issue, only 2010 members will receive the newsletter. We advice you to get your membership in early! With the way the numbers of memberships are coming in, we could max out on our 1500 this year. Don’t delay, renew your membership now. There will be some 2010 memberships that will be in the Spring QConline Mania Auction so watch your Argus/Dispatch for details. Any question about your membership can be directed to Becky. Keep those renewals coming in!

Support QCCA Expo Shows . . . here's why . . .

The Quad City Conservation Alliance is made up of 5 clubs. RICC is one of those clubs.
All shows held at the QCCA Expo Center are dependant on volunteers from each of the 5 clubs. You can be one of those people who can help both the QCCA and our club by calling Jerry and letting him know that you would be willing to work a show. Jerry will let you know what jobs are open and what hours are available. Jobs include: popcorn, concessions, tickets, ice cream, etc. Our club receives $3 for every hour that you work and that money is used for conservations programs here at our club. You will also be allowed to take in the show either before or after your shift. You must sign in before and after your shift so our club gets credit for your hours. We have some great projects lined up this year and those projected depend on money made from our volunteers that work the QCCA shows. So call Jerry today and tell him that you can work.

Shows that are coming up are:

  • Outdoor Show

  • RV/Camping show

  • Rod and Custom Show

  • Flower and Garden show

  • Home Builders show

  • Antique show

  • Woodworking & Home Remodeling show

  • Train show

Ice Fishing Tournament Report:       Dan Galusha

The Rock Island Conservation Club held its 2010 Ice fishing tournament on Ssaturday, January 30.  We had 143 entrants to start off our cold morning. Everyone braved the cold and some nice fish were caught. The clubhouse was filled to capacity and beyond for lunch and awards. A special thanks to all who made this event successful. We are already discussing next years event and taking notes on how to improve.  See you all next year and be safe on the ice!

LOOKING FOR PINOCHLE PLAYERS!   Bob and Val Pulscher: 787-2284

Are you a Pinochle player? Are you interested in getting out of the house? Meeting new people? And playing some cards?  Well if you are interested, please call Bob or Val at 309-787-2284 and let them know.  If there is enough interest, then the club would be host to monthly? Bi-monthly? Or weekly pinochle parties. So please give us a call and we will send out more information once we see what the response is.  Any question can be directed to Bob or Val. Looking forward to meeting some die hard pinochle players!

Executive/General Membership Meetings:      Jay Pienta 786-1364

Club meetings are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month.
Executive meetings start at 6:30. General membership meetings start at 7:30.
A meal is served between the meetings, usually around 7:00. Members are welcome to attend the executive meetings however are not allowed to participate unless scheduled to speak, or if they fill out a request form at the beginning of the meeting. Attendance to the general membership meetings are highly encouraged as is participation. The club needs your input and you need to know what is going on with your club. We encourage you to bring a guest and hopefully sign them up as a member. The meal between the meeting is always something different and donations are encouraged to defray costs. I would like to see our meeting nights full with members, so plan on attending a meeting and see what its all about.

MASK TRIVIA: The tradtion of masked mischief in Venice began in the 11th century as part of the getup guaranteeing anonymity to boys, whose hobby it was to hurl eggs at young noble-women.

In and out of favor since then, Venetian masks were used to obscure the identity of those testifying in court or to enhance one's outfit for a night on the town.  In the 17th century, they were ruled decadent and relagated to Carnevale.

Masks disappeared when Napoleon gave Venice to Austria -- only to return in the mid 20th century with commedia dell'arte theater.  Today you can buy masks for just about any costume you can dream.

See you and your mask at the 2010 RICC Halloween Party. Shown below are some of the fun costumes from the 2009 party.

Mike Hughes, Bar Manager

309-787-4770

We continue to try to have the bar open on weekends if there are no club rentals booked. By having the bar open it allows our members to come on in out of the weather, enjoy a  beverage and meet some new members. We have Mama Bosso pizzas available, and always a cold selection of drinks on tap. So check out the dates on Page 1 of the newsletter, and as always double check our open sign on the club door incase our dates have changed due to rentals. Hope to see some new faces and our regulars too. Enjoy your summer!

Berta Garcia 309-787-1242

THE WOMEN IN THE OUTDOORS PROGRAM

Welcome to the National Wild Turkey Federation's Women in the Outdoors. We're so glad you've taken the time to learn more about our exciting program.

The Women in the Outdoors program is an outdoor educational program that provides hands-on, in-the-field learning opportunities for women. The program offers women a chance to learn about various outdoor activities that are educational and fun for both the novice and experienced outdoor enthusiast.

Through Women in the Outdoors events, women from all walks of life are being given the chance to experience the thrill of outdoor activities such as camping, recreational shooting, archery, fishing, fly fishing, wild turkey hunting, birdwatching, canoeing, and outdoor cooking, and many other fun activities. The events will also allow women to develop a greater understanding of wildlife conservation and meet others who share their enthusiasm. We know that not every woman is interested in hunting so we ensure there is always a mix of classes so everyone will find classes that appeal to them.

If you've never seen how enthusiastic and amazed women are when they hit their first clay pigeon or see how great the women are at cheering their classmates on when they hit OR miss a clay pigeon; it's a pretty awesome sight.

Maybe shooting isn't your forte; what about fishing or fly fishing? How about experiencing the serenity of learning to fish and then catching your first fish?

Have you ever had the desire to learn how to shoot a bow? You may never go archery hunting, but maybe you like the thought of target practice.

Have you ever wondered how women in the 1800's lived? How about taking a pioneer women skills class and learn about building fires with flint and steel, see replicas of guns that were used at that time, how about learning about what goes on at a civil war reenactment, what about learning to throw a tomahawk or knife?

These are just a couple of the different types of classes that are held at events.

"The Women in the Outdoors program allows the NWTF to reach an entirely new audience, one that has been overlooked in the past for outdoors sports and conservation" said Rob Keck, NWTF CEO.

Women in the Outdoors programs are held at various types of locations. From shooting clubs, archery clubs, hunting clubs, plantations, guide services, to private farms, or anywhere we can gather for a safe and fun day in the outdoors. The events are held across the country with experts on hand to teach in a non-competitive manner.

Women in the Outdoors members are from all over North America. We have Women's Regional Coordinators for every state, so no matter where you're from, there's a Coordinator who will be happy to assist you.

Contact Berta Garcia 309-787-1242 at the Rock Island Conservation Club to learn about local opportunities.
